Since when did security become more important to us than freedom? When this country was born we, as a country, enjoyed much security. We didn’t have to provide for our own defense. We didn’t have to rule ourselves. That was done for us by the King. But we didn’t have our freedom. Our money and crops went to a country far across the ocean in taxes. Everyone was Christian and that was it. If you believed or professed anything else you were arrested. This ability we have to voice our opinion about our ruler didn’t exist then. If you said anything about the King you were arrested. We had no freedom. And every man who fought the British in two separate wars valued freedom so much more than security. It was and still is more important. They knew that each man would have to provide for their own security and wellbeing for the most part but that they would be free. They were free to choose and to act for themselves. Free to believe whatsoever they wished. They could not only believe they needed a new ruler but they could make it happen. Free to tell their government “No More!” Free to demand change without having to resort to war. That was and is freedom. But today the people of this country have lost that fire, that passion for freedom. Today’s imbeciles think that freedom means free: Free healthcare, free homes, free food, free cars, free roads, and free everything. That is not the case. Freedom means work. We must work for our food, work for our healthcare, work to make our lives better. It is not the government’s responsibility provide everything for us. It is their job to secure our borders and to handle issues between states but that is it. No more, no less. Everything else is our job. And if someone won’t do it, kick ’em in the pants. This country needs to get up off the couch, get on their feet, and stand for freedom, because it IS more important than security.

My thought is this: Today we live in an age where we don't have to do everything ourselves. This independent mentality comes from ages when technology and communications were limited and one was forced to take care of themselves and be self-sufficient in order to survive. You speak as if the government is our enemy, a prowling wolf just waiting for the right time to go in for the kill. I contend, however, that our government is here to take care of us. With technology and communications so advanced we no longer have that same need as we did s long ago. Rural America is quickly disappearing and in its place are cities of immigrants and low income families that need our help. In todays society even many of our own neighbors are either unwilling to help or are unable to because they are in the same situation. We need an entity that has our best interest at heart. Unfortunately all the large entities out there such as big businesses only care for the next dollar. That is why we need government to step in. Yes they aren't perfect. Yes they make mistakes. But that doesn't mean we become pessimistic and look for every bad thing and blame it on the government as having ulterior motives.

I think I agree with Emilyv on this. we are being attacked on all fronts and most of them are not physical borders anymore. We need the government to step in and take control of all aspects because while we may be able to protect ourselves from a single person coming into our homes we cannot defend ourselves from an entire country who is determined to destroy us at all costs. We need government to help us because all that responsibility is too much for us to handle ourselves.

First to "Jim": The thought that the government needs to protect us is outlandish. A popular story told about the Japanese emperor is that when asked why he didn't straight up attack America after Pearl Harbor when we were weak, he said that "The element of surprise is gone. We know that at least half of America is armed. However, we do not know which half it is." Now whether this story is true or not I don't know. But the point still stands. As long as the American citizens are armed we are protected from all who wish to come against us. Even our own government.
Emily: If the government takes care of everything in our lives and we do not know how, nor have the strength of will to be self-sufficient, then we will crumble if our government falls. Even if they have our best interests at heart they only have to fail once. and when they do if we are totally dependent on our government then we will be forced to be dependent on the new government who hates us. However if we learn know to do things ourselves. If we arm ourselves and prepare for every possibility then we will be able to fight when our military or our government or both fail us. We must be passionate about freedom or we may find ourselves beholden, if not to our own government, then some other government who would subjugate us and remove us from our rights and our privileges which we have for so long enjoyed.

Levi,
This is my point though, larger businesses are destroying our small towns. Really they have already destroyed them. It is only a matter of time before the concept of owning your own business is all but annihilated. In their place are businesses who don't care for the consumer and care only for themselves. Prices on basic necessities are skyrocketing and even the middle class family is struggling. As individuals we do not have the money, time, or power to go up against these large corporations. This is why we need the regulations by the government to restrict those companies. We need programs that work properly to allow those who are having a hard time to rise above it. As for those countries who you say hate us, it is really our fault. We invaded multiple times. We simply refuse to keep our nose out of other peoples business. If we mind our own and focus our resources on our home front they will leave us alone.
