Once more we plunged into the driving snow.
Like fire it burned our faces and seared our eyes.
Every thread intertwining throughout our being screamed
Yet through sheer will alone we pressed forward.
With every breath another muscle cried for relief,
With every step another bone shook in agony.
Thoughts of grandeur and glory were far from our minds.
Ideas such as warmth or even sleep were gone.
Some would think that our only thought was survival,
But all we really thought about was taking the next step.
Soon everything once full of agony became trivial.
Just had to make the next step.
Then the next breath.
Which came harder and harder.
Our throats felt tattered and our lungs like rocks.
Our tounges were thick and heavy,
Numb from the frigid breaths we've stolen.
Our very lives were stolen.
Stolen from the depths of this indelible wasteland.
We were never meant to live,
Yet somehow we had.
Somehow we thieves survived,
Despite the efforts made to make it otherwise.
At first we thought we would triumph,
But now,
Now we knew we'd die here.
We did everything we could.
We pushed ourselves to the limit.
Our bodies spent,
Our muscles drained,
Our minds unable to even think anymore,
But we continued.
And when we reached that point where we could go no further.
As the elements threatened to overtake us.
Although the very sun itself had forsaken us to an awful hell.
And the wind continued to attack us relentlessly.
In the deepest part of our seemingly endless agony,
She came.
Beautiful and bright.
Her hair shone brighter than the brightness of all the diamonds in the world.
Her skin, whiter than the snow we traveled.
She welcomed us into her arms and together we flew.
Warmth filled us to the core.
Our muscles regained their strength.
Our bones ceased shaking.
As we flew across the expanse we had traveled I began to marvel
I marveled at the distance we came,
And at how long we had to have been there.
As the faceless landscape fell from us I had a fleeting thought of home,
And that we'd never make it.
But, we came home nonetheless.
A new home.
Our home.
It was our home from the very beginning.
And forever will be.
Peace.
Love.
Comfort.
Family.
These are all we feel now.
And these are all we need.
